Making my own double-pamphlet sketchbook

Roz Stendahl offers a free pamphlet making class (look here for the list of classes that Roz offers in 2019), so yesterday I made my first stitched Japanese double-pamphlet, which has two signatures and 32 pages (normal pamphlets have a single signature). It’s so satisfying! You can make it in one sit, it’s light but has enough pages for many sketches and it looks great. I used a single sheet of 30” x 22” Strathmore mixed media 500 paper and the pamphlet is about 5 1/2“ x 7 1/2”.

Because they are so easy to make, pamphlets are  a great way to try new paper and new sketchbook formats, or just to use as your main, not intimidating sketchbook.

This particular pamphlet is a slightly modified version of the basic Japanese double-pamphlet that Roz teaches in the class. I had a smaller, sturdier cardstock that was big enough for the cover but not for the flap (which is good to have because it adds support), so I used a second, larger piece of cardstock for an additional external cover. The finished pamphlet has an external covers with a flap (similar to a dust cover in a hardcover book, but stitched in) and an internal cover.

Roz’ pamphlet making is a great class to learn the foundations of bookmaking and it’s free, so I recommend you check it out if you are interested in sketchbook making.
